The Lydden Bell, hotel in Dover

The Lydden Bell is a recently renovated bed and breakfast in Dover where guests can make the most of its garden and bar.

The unit was cozy and clean, and we were able to park right in front. We were leaving too early in the morning to have breakfast at the pub, so the staff left us a generous portion of snacks for the road. Taking the bus into Canterbury was highly convenient.

Hubert House, hotel in Dover

This family-run guest house has won multiple awards and is the only accommodations provider in Dover with 4 stars and the much coveted Gold Award.

Very friendly hostess. Huge and delicious breakfast. I had booked a small room, but was upgraded to a huge room. Located about midway between the train station (about a 15 min. walk) and the castle (less than 15 min. walk). Just a few minutes’ walk to the shore, with a Marks & Spencer Foodhall and lots of restaurants right nearby. A very comfortable and enjoyable stay; I would like to go back again.

An Ancient Port of Call

Dover is famous for the white cliffs which would have been a striking sight to the Romans as they advanced on England. They decided to construct a port at this strategic spot and it has held an important role ever since. Ferries to Calais and Dunkirk cross the English Channel several times daily and some brave souls even manage to swim across.

A Roman lighthouse still stands atop a hill overlooking the port, but is easily missed as it was incorporated into Saxon St Mary de Castro Church as the bellower. It is found within the grounds of 13th-century Dover Castle, one of England’s largest castles, whose multi-level ramparts sit above tunnels where the World War II Dunkirk evacuation was planned.

Another Roman monument is the Painted House whose remains include some of the best-preserved Roman murals north of Italy. Even older is the Bronze Age boat displayed in Dover Museum.

The Dover Transport Museum showcases vintage vehicles, and the Blériot Memorial marks the spot where the first airplane to fly across the Channel first touched English soil. A path runs along the top of the nearby cliffs, while at their feet is a shingle beach.

The Dover accommodation on Booking.com includes luxury hotels with pools, cheap inns and B&Bs near the train station.

Dover is a must see and can be placed on your bucket list. The walk along the cliffs is great and the Dover castle is well maintained and very interesting. Parking in Dover is as per all UK towns a problem and you need to plan accordingly or you can use the local bus services.

We spent a day and a half in Dover and came specifically to see the historical Fan Bay Shafts (National Trust) and Dover Castle (English Heritage). We found Fan Bay Shafts interesting and very 'genuine' history. Note that it is 45 minutes underground in damp, but not cold, tunnels, wearing a hard hat and head torch. Dover Castle warrants a whole day or more! Lots to see. We had time to see Deal Castle too. Good as a contrast, as it is a Tudor fortification. They have tried hard with their pretty good first floor exhibition, but the basement is an underused and under-explained resource which could be much more imaginatively tackled.

Dover needs significant regeneration: the town is tired and not appealing. I have known Dover since 1965 and to be honest it is probably now at its worst, but I can see some small signs of improvement: however everything being demolished is becoming a car park!! Dover needs to look like Folkestone or Deal: more independent and unique shops to attract people. Not the standard chains stores and "cheap shops", which of course have their place but different shops attract curiosity. The castle remains the main attraction, as does western heights and Dover Patrol memorial. Kirsney Abbey and Russell Gardens provide a tranquil side. the ride through Alkham Valley, always puts a smile on my face.

Dover is a very busy port town but also a town full of interesting history. We loved walking out along the pier, watching the ferries come in & go out, we enjoyed visiting Dover Castle very much, it is well worth putting a day aside to visit the castle and we found the town centre to contain everything we needed for our visit; minimart, chemist, shoe shop, pubs, restaurants & coffee shops. It’s small enough to walk everywhere & plenty to do. There’s a great walk along the famous white cliffs which we ran out of time to do but we’d like to come back one day & see more of this great town. In all, Dover is a bit rough around the edges but a very interesting town to visit, especially if you like boats, the seaside & history.

Plenty to do in Dover and with travel issues (traffic and train strikes) well worth reducing the stress and planning a day in Dover. Premier Inn offered (online reservation) for Bag stashers. Local museum has amazing Bronze age boat! Dover castle has so many different historic periods covered - Roman lighthouse, Plantagenet castle and World war II hospital / headquarters - allow plenty of time.

Dover is really undergoing a regeneration process, the beach are is very popular and the marina is just lovely. The town itself is very run down indeed and we avoided it this time. We did spend a lot of time walking on the beach and enjoying the lovely atmosphere.

My brother and I came to Dover for the weekend in order to visit the famous White Cliffs, and we spent a night at Maison Dieu Guesthouse. We chose this particular guesthouse for its high ratings. Upon arrival, the hosts were very friendly and kindly offered us a cup of tea with biscuits. The room itself had all the amenities we needed, and a table with a kettle and tea/coffee. The heating inside our room worked very well. We had our private bathroom on the same floor, and everything was clean and nicely organised.

We were made to feel very welcome from the moment we arrived. Everything that we needed to know was explained in a very friendly manner. Breakfast time was a delight with a variety of choices. The breakfast cooked by George was delicious and the hospitality in a very polite and friendly atmosphere was fantastic. The location was brilliant as Dover‘s attractions including the town, castle, beach, harbour, the famous white cliffs and much more were all in walking distance.

George, his lovely wife and Jan have been very warm, welcoming and helpful. We feel right at home here. They were kind to let us deposit our luggage before check in and after we have checked out. That made our moving around in Dover so much more easier They upgraded us to a triple room, it is very clean. It has nice hot shower, firm bed, beverage and biscuits were provided. We will stay here again if we visit Dover again :)

we absolutely loved the room. So clean and bright. First we loved how comfortable beds but the next day we all had back pains. I believe they dont support that well. The table and chairs ere great and breakfast tray. Really nice accomodation but Dover seemed a little forgotten unfortunately. A little sad considering the tourist attraction of the castle and the harbour.

The apartment was very nice and cosy and we felt very comfortable. The location was perfect for us, just a few minutes from Dover and Deal. We were travelling with our dog and there was a great opportunity to go for a walk in the immediate neighbourhood. Jo and his wife were incredibly nice and helpful hosts. We would book the accommodation directly again.

The guest house is located close to the Dover castle, seaside and the city centre. Our room was quite spacious, with a beamed ceiling, two beautiful windows with outside flower boxes and was furnished in the "old" style. The bed was excellent. We were warmly welcomed by the concierge John, who gave us a great introduction to the city's history.

The generous hospitality of Michael and Andrullia was the highlight of our stay. Get Michael to bring out his guitar and regale you with his talent. We were impressed. The delicious breakfast dished out kept us going through the climb to the 'White cliffs' and onward to the Dover castle.Truly amazing! Overall a '10'.Nothing less.
