Hotels on M1 Motorway

This page covers hotels on M1 motorway (London – Sheffield – Leeds). First I list hotels directly at M1 service stations and then additional options (usually hotels within a mile from a junction) for individual sections of M1, ordered from south (London) to north (Leeds). All junctions, service stations and hotels listed here are accessible from both directions (northbound and southbound) unless stated otherwise.

Hotels on M1 near London (Within M25)

Junction 1 (Brent Cross, North Circular)

Holiday Inn London Brent Cross – On the North Circular Road, just 350m from the start of M1 (to the east). Easy to see as it’s a modern high rise building with Holiday Inn logo at the top.

London Gateway Services

Ramada London North – Directly at London Gateway service station, which is accessible from both directions. The most convenient location on this section of M1.

Junction 4 (Harrow, Edgware)

Village Hotel London Watford – Although this hotel is just 500m from J4 air distance wise, the drive from M1 and back onto it is lengthy and complicated. At J4 there is no M1 exit northbound and no M1 entry southbound. You can take A41 as alternative (access via M1 J1 and J5).

Junction 5 (Watford)

Hilton Watford Hotel – 1km from J5 on A41 direction to Central London; if driving southbound you can continue on A41.

Mercure London Watford Hotel – 1km from the Hilton above (2km from J5) on A41 towards Central London.

Junction J6 (North Watford)

Premier Inn Watford North – On North Orbital Road, less than a mile from M1 J6 and 2 miles from M25 J21A.

Hotels on M1 near London (Outside M25)

Junction 8 (Hemel Hempstead)

Holiday Inn Hemel Hempstead M1 – Half mile from J8 just off the main road going to Hemel Hempstead city centre.

Hotels on M1 near Luton

Junction 9 (Redbourn, Flamstead)

The Old Dairy Flamstead – This hotel has, as I am writing this, a rare 9.9/10 rating from 128 guests on Booking.com. Less than a mile from J9.

Holiday Inn Luton South – Located on A5, 2 miles from M1 J9.

Junction 10 (Luton South & Airport)

There are no hotels immediately close to the M1 junction, but both Luton Airport and Luton city centre are just 2 miles away. Three hotels next to the airport are the following:

Ibis London Luton Airport – Usually the cheapest of the three. The typical airport Ibis hotel, providing all the basics at competitive price.

Holiday Inn Express London Luton Airport – Highest rated of the three (but differences are not that big in either ratings and rates).

Holiday Inn London Luton Airport – Yes, two different Holiday Inns 150 metres apart.

One downside of airport hotels is that unlike most other hotels off M1 listed on this page, these charge for parking. On the other hand, if you arrive late at night, many shops and services at and around the airport have longer opening hours, some even 24/7.

Among the bigger cities off M1, Luton centre is one of the closest to motorway junctions, so you can stay downtown without much extra driving. Here you can search hotels in Luton.

Junction 11 (Luton North)

Addington Court Apartments – Self catering, one of the best quality accommodation options in this area. Less than a mile from J11, with free parking.

Chiltern Hotel – This one, on the contrary, is among the cheapest hotels in & near Luton, also less than a mile from J11 and also with free parking.

Hotels on M1 near Milton Keynes

Junction 13 (Bedford, Milton Keynes South)

Best Western Moore Place Hotel – Located in Aspley Guise, 2km from J13. A nice Georgian mansion with spacious rooms with a writing desk.

Junction 14 (Milton Keynes Central)

Best Western Milton Keynes – In Broughton, which is the first part of Milton Keynes right next to the motorway.

Holiday Inn Express Milton Keynes – Highest rated hotel off junction 14, less than 1km from the motorway in a nice neighbourhood near Willen Lake.

Holiday Inn Milton Keynes East – If you prefer to stay out of town, this hotel is situated 1km from J14 on the other (north) side – on A509 in direction away from Milton Keynes.

Newport Pagnell Services

Ramada Milton Keynes – Directly at the service station on the northbound side. No direct southbound access (you can turn at junction 14, which is 3 miles to the south, but when leaving to the south it’s better to drive through the city, as the next junction on M1 to the north is 8 miles away).

Hotels on M1 near Northampton

Junction 15 (Northampton South)

There are two hotels immediately next to J15 and another one less than 500m away. All have free parking, two have free WiFi:

Holiday Inn Express Northampton – The highest rated and closest to the motorway.

Campanile Hotel Northampton – This is the one with non-free WiFi, but otherwise usually a bit cheaper than the others.

Hilton Northampton Hotel – This is the one that is a bit further away from the motorway, although in a nicer greener area and still just 500 metres from J15. It has a gym, swimming pool, sauna and spa.

Northampton Services / Junction 15A

There are no hotels at this service station.

Junction 16 (Northampton West)

Holiday Inn Northampton West – Located on A45 2km from J16. They actually state 4km, but it’s really just 2km (it is one of very rare cases when a hotel claims being further away from something than it really is – usually it’s the other way).

Hotels on M1 near Rugby & Coventry

Watford Gap Services

The oldest service station in the UK (since 1959, same as this oldest section of M1). The one known for popular bands like the Beatles or Rolling Stones often stopping here in the 60’s.

Junction 20 (Lutterworth)

Jasmine House – A highly rated B&B situated in the centre of Lutterworth, a small town next to the motorway. 1km from the junction. Free WiFi and free parking.

The Greyhound Coaching Inn – 200 metres further down the high street. An 18th century hotel with antique furnishings. Also has free WiFi, but parking costs £3.20 per day.

Hotels on M1 near Leicester

Junction 21 (Leicester, M69)

Leicester Marriott Hotel – Less than half a mile from the junction, featuring spacious rooms with large flat-screen TVs, a fitness centre, sauna and swimming pool. On the other hand, in-room WiFi and parking both come at a charge.

Hilton Leicester Hotel – Also less than half a mile from J21. Also a fitness/wellness area with massages available. Rooms have work desks. WiFi and parking not free.

Leicester Forest East Services

Days Inn Hotel Leicester – Situated on the northbound side, accessible from the southbound side on foot only. This service station has an unusual layout, with a large shops and restaurants building straddling the motorway, with access from both sides.

Burleigh Court Hotel and Leisure – Another very modern hotel with numerous facilies situated within Loughborough University area, 2.5km from J23. Free WiFi, free parking.

The Guesthouse at Shepshed – Among the cheapest you can find on M1, and highly rated. This guesthouse is located in Shepshed town centre, 2.5km from J23. Free WiFi, free parking.

Hotels on M1 near Nottingham & Derby

There are numerous places to stay around East Midlands Airport (search all here), although many of them priced with a slight airport premium. More convenient locations with respect to M1 access and prices can be found just next to junction 24:

The following three hotels are situated in Kegworth, a small town just 1km from J24. All are priced at similar levels and unlike the above Hilton all offer free WiFi and free parking:

Kegworth Hotel East Midlands Airport – Large conference facilites and free gym.

Best Western Premier East Midlands Airport – Nice swimming pool and large fitness/wellness/spa facilities. The only one of the three which allows pets (on request).

Junction 31 (Sheffield, Worksop, A57)

Best Western Plus Aston Hall Hotel – Situated in a nice 18th century manor house in Aston, less than a mile from J31. It has a country luxury feel, but it’s priced like most other hotels near the motorway. Rooms have private bathrooms featuring a walk-in wet room with black granite decor.

Holiday Inn Leeds-Wakefield – 300m from J40, more or less across the street from the above. Both these hotels offer free WiFi, free parking, similar room rates and also have similar review ratings.

Hotels on M1 near Leeds

Junctions 41-45 don’t have accommodation options nearby. Some of them are busy motorway junctions (especially J42 – M1/M62).

Junction 46 (Leeds, Selby, A63)

Thorpe Park - A Shire Hotel & Spa – The hotel closest to M1 near Leeds, just off J46 (Austhorpe Interchange). It has a very impressive pool and spa area, and 9+ guest review rating at the moment. Free WiFi; parking costs £3 per day. Overall one of the best hotels on the entire M1, but priced accordingly.
