Frydek-Mistek Basic Information

Frydek-Mistek is a city in the Moravian-Silesian Region in the north-east of the Czech Republic, 17 km to the south from Ostrava. It has a population of almost 60,000 (rank 17 in the Czech Republic). It is the capital of Frydek-Mistek district (okres).

For most of its history, Frydek-Mistek was actually two towns: Frydek (in the north-east) and Mistek (in the south-west). The two towns were merged in 1943 to form Frydek-Mistek. The border between Frydek and Mistek (and also the border of Moravia and Silesia) is formed by the Ostravice River, which flows through the city.

Frydek-Mistek Economy and Industry

Frydek-Mistek is a traditional industrial city. In the 19th century its economy was dominated by textile factories. In the second half of the 20th century the city became and important centre of heavy industry – especially steel works and nearby coal mines Staric and Paskov. In the last years, machinery and automotive industry have become equally important. There is a Hyundai plant in Nosovice, 7 km to the east from the centre of Frydek-Mistek.

  • From Olomouc, Novy Jicin, and Pribor (13 km) by road I/48 (E462)
  • From the south (Beskydy Mountains, Frydlant nad Ostravici) by road I/56

There are frequent bus services between Frydek-Mistek and most of the nearby towns, especially Ostrava, which is about 30 minutes by bus. There is also a regional railroad Ostrava – Frydek-Mistek – Frenstat pod Radhostem – Valasske Mezirici.
