Best Areas to Stay in Athens
Athens are a big city, but the centre where most of the tourist attractions are located, where the concentration of hotels is high, and where most visitors actually prefer to stay, is very small. It is concentrated around the Acropolis (the landmark temple hill), covering the areas of Syntagma (the very centre around Syntagma Square) and Plaka (immediately at the foot of the Acropolis in the north and north-east), and to some extent other nearby districts such as Monastiraki and Thissio. This part of Athens offers the widest choice of accommodation options, as well as the best restaurants, proximity to places, atmosphere, and general convenience.
